for Europe, the Countdown 2010 Secretariat
and the Georgian Centre for The Conservation
of Wildlife organized an international conference “Countdown
2010 in the Caucasus - From Commitments to Action” on
15-17 May 2006 in Gudauri, Georgia. The Countdown 2010 initiative for the
Caucasus countries was launched during this event, and a Media Training for twelve journalists from central and Eastern Europe was held in parallel.
The present transition to a market economy requires increased efforts to ensure that the rich natural heritage of the Caucasus is used sustainably. The overall goal of Countdown 2010 is that all European governments, at every level, have taken the necessary actions to halt the loss of biodiversity by 2010.

Logistical information
Conference languages: English and Russian. The Conference was held in the Sport Hotel Club Gudauri in Northern Georgia, two hours from the capital Tbilisi (international airport). A training for Caucasus journalists will be organised in parallel to the Conference.
